Sheila O fetes Grammy nominees, Tobe Nwigwe, Rocky Dawuni. Rapper Tobe Nwigwe, who was born in Nigeria and now resides in the United States, and Rocky Dawuni, who is from Ghana, were recently guests of international broadcasting legend Sheila O in Lagos. Dawuni was nominated for “Best Global Music Performance,” while Nwigwe was nominated in the “Best New Artiste” category. Nwigwe is also an actress.

Tobe Nwigwe and Rocky Dawuni were guests of Sheila O, the pioneering music show Afrozons presenter, during a media event in Lagos on Friday, January 13, 2023.

The “Lord forgive me” rapper expressed his feelings on the nomination, saying, “For me it’s quite overwhelming and that they would have the nerve to nominate an independent artiste like myself especially in this sort of category.” The rapper attended the event with his wife. Even though I was astonished, it was a pleasant surprise. Simply said, we are overjoyed to be in this situation.

Third-time Grammy nominee Dawuni stated: “African music has always had an influence on the globe, and it has an impact right now. However, the impact was never recognized by the globe since, as you can see by listening to popular music, it was more of a cultural exchange between the homeland and the diaspora. However, because to the Internet’s influence, many of the old gatekeepers who used to determine what an African sound was have been bypassed by our music. This, in my opinion, marks a turning point in African music.

The addition of the Afrobeats category to the Grammy Awards is being pushed for by Sheila O, a voting member of the Recording Academy who just got her PHD in media and communications from Myles Leadership University, Benin.
